Among Us "The Airship" Map Review
If you know me, I like to play Among Us with friends every weekend. On the 1st April 2021, finally, we all got ourselves a new Among Us map that we’ve been waiting for since the announcement at The 2020 Game Award. The Airship is inspired by Henry’s Stickmin location. Today I’m going to review the new Among Us Map, how’s the design thinking, the task, and the map itself. In the last 7 days, I’ve been analyzing, playing, looking at the map layout, and explore the map solo so I can feel and understand the map itself.
When I play for the first time and saw the map, I realize that the map is so huge. There’re many new places like Cockpit, Kitchen, Armory, and many more. Since the map is so big, The Airship for sure is not for the first time player. Even me and my friend who play Among us every weekend got lost in the middle of the map, not knowing where to go. I even need to open the map when moving to know my destination. It will be pretty confusing and hard to learn the map since there’s a lot to take.
The Gap Room
There’s a place called Gap Room that has a moving platform in it. The platform moves the player to the other side when a player interacts with it, and only one player can hop into the platform. If you get the side with no platform, you cannot call the platform and you need to take a different longer path. This is frustrating every time the platform is not on my side, so I need to take a long path to get to the other side. The platform is only good for a getaway tool from the imposter, but imagine if there's no platform.
Electrical/Maze
Electrical, the place where every Among Us map has, but in this map, there’s a twist. If the imposter does light sabotage, crewmates can fix it in three different spots since the map is so big. This electrical area is a maze. If you look at the map layout, the electrical is a grid area, which is not. The area turns into a small maze that confuses players with a small vision. Not to mention there’s a task there that you need to pull several levers in ascending number. The maze always changes every game so you cannot memorize it.
Ladder
Ladder, the mechanic that all Among Us fans wait. If you interact with the ladder, you go up or down the ladder until you reach the destination. There’re three ladder spots but I’m going to discuss the ladder below Meeting Room. I don’t like there’s only a single way in and out of the Meeting Room using the ladder. The Meeting Room should be in the middle that easy to access so players can call a meeting, not at the edge of the map. Even you didn’t spawn at the Meeting Room, the room placement is just not right for me.
There’re a lot of amazing new tasks like making burger, dressing mannequin, put away riffles, and many more. There’re also a lot of weird new tasks like taking out the trash and clean the toilet. I love almost every new task in The Airship but there are two new tasks there’re annoying, the reset breaker and unlock safe. The reset breaker is in Electrical that looks like a maze, which I explained before. The unlock safe is just not consistent. The task required crewmates to unlock the safe, even we did what the paper asked, the lock just won’t open.
At the end of the day, I will still play Among Us every weekend with friends. It is amazing how only a few developers who worked on this game can deliver such a large map. Even there’s a lot of cons I talk about, I still respect the developers' work on this map. The large map opens a lot of players to explore new ways to play and find the right meta. I would not recommend first timer player to play this map since it is a lot to take. I sure the developer will fix some inconsistent and bugs that occurred in the new map.
