Hue Review

A while ago, I scroll down the game store and saw Hue, a 2016 indie puzzle game designed by Henry and Dan Da Rocha and developed by Fiddlesticks. The game caught my eye from the bright 8 basic colors. Once I bought and download it, I played it and it was shocking how this game changes my perspective of a 2D platformer puzzle. It is hard to describe Hue to the audience, but what I can say is Hue is an excellent impossible game, but possible.

The story begins when Hue, the main character, wakes up in the middle of a black and gray world to find his missing mother. For me, the story is a bit too vague and I quite don’t understand until I looked it up on the internet. Every milestone you achieve, there’s a letter from a mysterious person that explains the nature & meaning of the color. But this game is not about the story, what’s stand out the most, is the gameplay experience.

Color is what makes this game so different than the other game I’ve played. The world is made of black and grey color, and Hue got the ability to change the gray color to a different color you choose from the palette of eight. If you change the world into a color blue, the blue object in the level will become invisible, and it applies the same rule as the other color. As the puzzle progress, the game will create a difficult puzzle, even it sounds impossible but it’s possible.

It not much to talk about color. What I can tell is that the game feels immersive, even it is a 2D platformer. The color is perfect, the game includes all eight basic colors in the world. The game use as minimal as possible for any background music. The music in the game is easily forgettable, it also because the scene is not interesting to be remembered. But what’s interesting is the sound effect where every object in the game has its own sound.

This is the game a could recommend for everyone who seeks a pure puzzle 2D platformer game since it has simple mechanics but complex enough to challenge players. If there will be a sequel or another game that is similar to Hue, I recommend adding level creation like Super Mario Maker, it would be interesting how players create a complex level to be finished by other players. So far, this is the best 2D platformer puzzle game I have played.
