Sea of Solitude Review
I have one day left until my EA Play subscription comes to an end, and I think that I want to review one more game from my EA Play subscription. I only have a little time, so I check all the games' playtime. After research, Sea of Solitude is the game that I play. It is a 2,5 hour game, and I played it in one sitting. The game is developed by Jo-Mei Games in July 2019. The game is themed around loneliness and didn't get it the first time, but the theme shapes up as I play.
For the first time I played this game, I feel that the story is a bit blurry at the end because you need to have a strong understanding of this game. I fully understand this game after an explanation about a TED Talk titled “A video game that helps us understand loneliness”. Even I don't fully understand the story very much, but I learn something about this game. The game have a couple For me, this is not my type of game, but it is still a good game and worth a try.
You will play a young woman named Kay who suffers strong loneliness and end up become a monster. Kay will explore an endless flooded city that looks like a sea, haunted by two big monsters. The monster is trying to block Kay’s way and reveal the truth about Kay's loneliness. When exploring the world, Kay finds every person that Kay ever loved. Kay will explore the loneliness of their loved ones, like other humans, Kay and Kay's loved ones have similar loneliness problems.
The game is about following the instruction of where to go. AT the beginning of the game, Kay will receive a ball of light that when thrown, the ball will fly towards the direction where Kay needs to go. There’re some puzzles in the game where Kay needs to reach a certain part of the world but the puzzles are pretty straight forwards. Even they're straight forwards, the puzzles are different from each other, there’re enemy-based, platform-based, and even both. I believe that anyone can finish the puzzle.
Kay looks amazing in this game and even every character in the game. The water of the ocean is so clean and you can even look down the ocean and see the flooded buildings. The building and the theme are very Venice, just like Kay said. There’re some parts where Kay needs to face her fear and the character are not too scary, but the music and the echoing are frighted me. The developers do play with the player’s hearing. I even still remember the echoing sound of people.
Personally, I didn't enjoy it as much, but in the end, it is a good game. I like how the game's ending, and I like the direction of this game. Well even I am not the type of person who fully understands this game, but I can enjoy the game and understand what the developers are trying to teach us. The game might be for you to understand what is loneliness and how to face it. I recommend this game to everyone who has spare cash and just plays for the story. You might enjoy the game along the way.
