“The meteor shower from yesterday disaster, causes a leak on a water pipe, making the colony dehydrated for one solar day” This is the news that I’ve been receiving from the last couple of days by playing Surviving Mars, a city building simulator developed by Haemimont Games. The game that I’ve restarted 3 times until I get settle surviving resources to maintain a colony on Mars.

The game is somewhat a simulation for a future of Earth where humans need to migrate to Mars to survive. Start by sending drones and collect resources to create other resource collection buildings. At every point in time, the colony will get a random event like a new colony arrived on Mars, or receiving a celebrity into your colony. The random event is a good addition to the game and makes the game more diverse.
As mention before, the game starts by collecting resources by drones. From that, humans can start migrating to Mars and grow a colony. Every time the colony grows, the resource demand is increasing, and that’s the start of the stress. Some random disasters could also damage the colony, but if the base is well prepared, the humans could be saved and counter the disaster. All electricity, oxygen, and water are valuable in this game.
The graphic is incredible. I like how the developer put so much time into the detail for every building and vehicle in this game. The environment is immersive, even the burnt surface causes by the rocket is still there. The music has a unique mechanic. The player can choose what music to play while his/her playing. The game offers you a massive list of radio channels to hear with, the list will gradually increase following the progression of the game. Every radio offers a different type of music and funny news and I like how they created it.

Personally, I love sandbox games or any games that let you build something from scratch. The twist is the game serves me on a different level, where I need to manage the resources, my time, and even little detail that I need to maintain. It’s a different experience for me and I know you’ll too. The game is so fun, I even forget to review it, but thankfully I manage to give some time to review it.
