Mortal Kombat Movie Review

If you have or haven't watched Mortal Kombat yet, you're save to read this review. I'

ll try my best to not spoil anything from the movie, but I'll mention a couple of lore stories from the game itself.

If you're living under the rock, Mortal Komat itself was originally a video game that is created in 1992 by Midway Games. Mortal Kombat is a fighting game that features a blood and gore fighting experience. Until now, Mortal Kombat has been a successful video game franchise with over 22 total games and still counting. This 2021 movie that I'm about to review, is a reboot of the previous 1995 Mortal Kombat movie.

So the movie, I think they can do better but so far as this is their first movie after the reboot, I think it is a good start. Some fans are pretty disappointed with the movie since there's not much Mortal Kombat lore reference in the movie but come on, this is a live-action video game movie, it is more than enough it could be this good.

Start with the main character, Cole Young. He's just an orphan who lived with his wife and daughter, making a living as an MMA fighter with declining performance. The main character is so boring and not much to explore compared to the rest of the characters. The character's purpose is to help introduce new fans to the Mortal Kombat world but you can literally use another 100 human race characters from the Mortal Kombat universe as the main character and help introduce the Mortal Kombat lore itself.

The rest of the character is okay I guess, even some of them can be improved. My favorites are Sub-Zero and Scorpion, both characters are amazing in the movie, and also in the game as well. It is a bit disappointing that both characters didn't have much screen time fighting each other since their rivalry is legendary. Every time both characters show up, the Mortal Kombat original song played and it suddenly becomes intense.

The movie has a lot of references from the video game itself, like some of the weapons and legendary items from the game are visible in the movie. Some of the signatures moves from the game also appeared in the movie, like the bicycle kick from Liu Kang and teleportation from Kung Lao are there.

Speaking of video game references, there's a lot of fatality and announcer references. Like when a character wins the battle by not losing single health and that character proudly say "FLAWLESS VICTORY", or that time in the trailer where Kano wins the battle proudly says "KANO WINS". That moment gives a little goosebump and shows how the character's brutally killing their opponent.

There's not much talk about the fight scene itself, almost all fight scenes are quite straightforward and boring since they always cut mid-fight into a different angle. I saw that The Raid movie is more like a Mortal Kombat movie where there's an intense fight scene with a lot of blood and sadistic to it. The only noticeable fight scene is Sub-Zero vs Scorpion. Sub-Zero played by Joe Taslim, and Scorpion played by Hiroyuki Sanada. Both actors have a history of good martial arts training and have a good reputation for fight choreography. When both actors fight each other in the movie, there's the moment that feels Mortal Kombat's fight at least should be.

I personally didn't like how the story goes in the movie. There's no tournament what so ever and the story sets before the tournament even begins. I hope they know what there's doing since this first movie can be a good based story for the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie. I wish where I watch a Mortal Kombat 2, there's a tournament setup and all characters have their own time to shine in the tournament.

I haven't followed the storyline of Mortal Kombat since it was decades enough for me to understand all the story, but I know a few of the lore and how the game works. The movie is okay to watch, but for you Mortal Kombat fans, don't expect a lot of lore reference because there're only of few of them. The movie is a pretty good start for a Mortal Kombat movie, there's so much to explore in the series and I cannot wait for the second movie to come out. If the series doing well. It will be a second movie where Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero/Noob Saibot) already signed up for future movies. So "GET OVER HERE!!" and watch if you haven't.
